Travel destination Antwerp

Antwerp: A pearl of the Flemish region of Belgium

In early March, I found myself drawn to Antwerp. This beautiful city positively surprised me. From its impressive architecture to its culinary delights and art scene, Antwerp has something to offer everyone. I've described a few of the sights in more detail and included some videos and pictures. Enjoy my report.

Antwerp is a fascinating port city in the Flemish region of Belgium. With an area of 204.51 km², it is the third largest city in Belgium after Tournai and Couvin. Antwerp is the most populous municipality in Belgium and the second largest metropolitan region in the country after Brussels.

Antwerp's history dates back to the 17th century. The city was an important center of trade and culture during the Flemish Renaissance. Today, Antwerp is known for its diverse architecture, vibrant art scene, and dynamic economy.

Diamonds: The Sparkling Heart of the City

Antwerp's heart beats with diamond light. A legacy spanning centuries, the city has become the global epicenter of the diamond trade. Witness the raw allure of rough diamonds at the bustling bourse. Discover a world of brilliance at DIVA, where sparkling treasures are showcased. Or delve into the artistry of diamond cutting, where nature's masterpieces are refined to perfection.

Fashion: A paradise for fashionistas

Antwerp is a paradise for fashion lovers. The city is home to the renowned Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp (FAMAR), which has produced fashion designers such as Dries Van Noten and Ann Demeulemeester. Stroll down the Meir, Antwerp's exclusive shopping street, and browse the boutiques in fashion districts like Kloosterstraat and Zuid.

Historical flair: Time travel through the centuries

Antwerp's architectural tapestry weaves a vibrant story of its rich past. Wander through the majestic Market Square, where the Gothic Brabo statue and ornate guildhalls stand as silent sentinels of time. Gaze up at the towering spires of the Gothic Our Lady's Cathedral and experience the city's grandeur. Admission is €10 for adults. Delve into Antwerp's maritime heritage by exploring the historic harbor district, where the echoes of the 16th century still linger among the ancient warehouses.

Art and culture: A broad spectrum

Antwerp offers a diverse cultural scene. Admire the masterpieces of Rubens and Van Dyck at the Rubens House, explore modern art at the MUHKA (Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp), or dive into the world of shipping at the MAS (Museum aan de Stroom).

Here is my video from the rooftop terrace of the MAS Museum:

Here are the most important sights you can see in one day:

Cathedral of Our Lady: This Gothic cathedral is an impressive landmark of the city. It houses the famous painting cycle "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb" by Jan van Eyck. (10€ entrance fee)

Museum aan de Stroom (MAS): This modern museum offers a fascinating insight into the history and culture of Antwerp. It boasts an impressive collection of art, artifacts, and exhibits.

Antwerp Central Station: This magnificent station is an architectural gem and an important transport hub in Europe. It was built in the Neo-Gothic style and is a popular meeting place for travelers and locals.

Diamond District: Antwerp is renowned as the "world's diamond capital." More than 70% of all diamonds are traded here. The Diamond District is a vibrant hub for jewelers, traders, and gem enthusiasts.

Historic Old Town: Antwerp's old town is a labyrinth of narrow streets, historic buildings, and lively squares. Here you'll find charming cafes, boutiques, and antique shops.

Rubens House: The former home of the famous Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens is now a museum. It houses an impressive collection of his works and offers insights into his life and artistic development.
