Cyprus: A Mediterranean Paradise of Sun, Culture, and Hospitality

Cyprus, the third largest island in the Mediterranean, is a land rich in fascinating history, breathtaking landscapes, and hospitable people. From ancient ruins and medieval fortresses to crystal-clear beaches and snow-capped mountains, Cyprus offers something for everyone.

The capital and largest city is Nicosia. The official languages are Greek and Turkish, but Armenian and Arabic are also spoken by minorities. The currency is the Euro.

Cyprus has a long and eventful history dating back to the Stone Age. The island has been conquered and ruled by various empires, including the Assyrians, Egyptians, Persians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Crusaders, Venetians, Ottomans, and the British. Cyprus gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1960 but remained a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. In 1961, Cyprus joined the United Nations.

Since 1974, the island has been divided de facto. The south is controlled by the Republic of Cyprus, which is internationally recognized as encompassing the entire island (except for the British military bases of Akrotiri and Dhekelia). The north is under the control of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, which is only recognized by Turkey. Turkey militarily occupied this part of the island in 1974 after a Greek-inspired coup d'état aimed at uniting Cyprus with Greece. A buffer zone, known as the Green Line, separates the two areas and is monitored by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus. The Green Line also divides the capital, Nicosia, into two parts.

Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since 2004, but only with the territory of the Republic of Cyprus. The north of the island is also de jure part of the EU, but the Republic of Cyprus cannot exercise its rights there.

In 2008, negotiations began between the two sides to reunify the island, but so far without success. In 2004, Greek Cypriots rejected the Annan Plan, which proposed a federal solution, in a referendum. Turkish Cypriots voted in favor of the plan.

The best time to visit Cyprus depends on what you want to experience.

• Spring (March – May): Temperatures are pleasantly warm, flowers are in bloom, and the island is green. This is a good time for hiking and biking, and prices for accommodation and flights are lower than in summer.

• Summer (June – August): The weather is hot and sunny, and the beaches are crowded. This is the best time for swimming, sunbathing, and water sports. However, prices are higher and the island can be crowded.

• Autumn (September – November): Temperatures are still pleasantly warm, but there are fewer tourists. This is a good time to explore the island without the crowds.

• Winter (December – February): The weather is mild, but it can rain. This is the best time to explore the mountains and visit the Christmas markets.
