Travel Destination Bruges
Often referred to as the 'Venice of the North,' Bruges is a city steeped in history and culture. It's the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, located in the northwestern part of the country. With a population of around 118,509 (as of 2022), it's the sixth-largest city in Belgium. My last visit to Bruges was in 2021. I would recommend avoiding the summer months. It might get a bit crowded, but where doesn't it, right?
The historic center of Bruges is a prominent UNESCO World Heritage Site, characterized by its oval shape and an area of approximately 430 hectares. The total city area exceeds 14,099 hectares, including 1,075 hectares on the coast at Zeebrugge.
Bruges holds significant economic importance, thanks to its port, and was once one of the most important trading cities in the world. Today, Bruges is a major tourist destination within Belgium and is known as the seat of the College of Europe, a university institute for European studies.
The city has a rich history dating back to 840 AD when it was first mentioned as Bruggas, Brvggas, or Brvccia. Over time, Bruges developed into a major trading center and experienced a golden age in the Middle Ages, particularly during the Burgundian period.
Notable sights in Bruges include the Belfry, an 83-meter-high tower from the 13th century that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Gruuthuse Museum, which guides visitors through three crucial periods in Bruges' history. A boat trip on the canals of Bruges offers a unique perspective on the city and its picturesque waterways.
Bruges is also renowned for its culinary delights. Whether in a Michelin-starred restaurant or a cozy bistro, the city offers a variety of gastronomic experiences. For wine enthusiasts, there's the Bar à Vin Cuvee, located on one of Bruges' trendiest streets.
