Destination Dillenburg: City of the House of Orange


Dillenburg is a town with approximately 24,000 inhabitants in the Lahn-Dill district in Hesse. It is known for its historic old town and Dillenburg Castle, which played an important role in the history of the Netherlands.



History of Dillenburg


The first written mention of Dillenburg dates back to the year 775. In the Middle Ages, Dillenburg was an important fortress and residence of the Counts of Nassau-Dillenburg.

In the 16th century, the town gained particular significance when William of Orange, the later Stadtholder of the Netherlands, was born here. He led the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule and is considered a national hero of the Netherlands.


Dillenburg Castle was his main residence for a time and was never captured during the Thirty Years' War. However, it was destroyed by the French in the Seven Years' War.

After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Dillenburg fell to Prussia. In the 19th century, the town developed into a significant industrial location.
